Patriots Fall in a Battle against Stanton

By: Kanyon Held, junior at Leigh High School

In another week of Friday night lights, Clarkson-Leigh football team traveled to Stanton to take on the Mustangs on September 18, 2020.

The first half was a dog fight between the Patriots and the Mustangs. The Patriots scored first in the first quarter when Lance Paprocki scored a 1-yd rushing touchdown, then Eli Hays put in the two-point conversion afterwards. Late in the first quarter, Sutton Pohlman from Stanton ran in a 2-yd rushing touchdown for the Mustangs, but Stanton failed to put the two-point conversion in afterwards.

After these two touchdowns, the first half remained scoreless making the score 8-6 Clarkson-Leigh going into halftime.

In the third quarter, Stanton scored two more touchdowns, while the Patriots were scoreless. Pohlman had a 55-yd rushing touchdown and Trey Elbert scored on a 5-yd receiving touchdown. Gage Tighe ran in one of the two-point conversions after, and the Mustangs failed to put in the other.

Both Clarkson-Leigh and Stanton reached the end zone in the fourth quarter. For the Patriots, Lance Paprocki had a 3-yd rushing touchdown and Carter Hanel had a 10-yd rushing touchdown. The Patriots failed to put the two-point conversion in afterwards.

Pohlman scored three more touchdowns for Stanton in the fourth. Making the final score 42-20 in favor of the Mustangs.

When asked about the game, junior Carter Hanel said, “We played a good game. The effort and physicality was solid, but we were just missing a lot of pieces due to injury. I’m proud of our team, and it was too bad we couldn’t come out with a win.”

Assistant coach Bryan Becker said, This was a tough game from the start. Both teams were trying to establish their physicality early and the score was close at halftime. The mustangs took advantage of some errors that we made in the second half, leading to their victory. The Patriots competed with good effort. However we could not overcome some of our mistakes. Our running game gave the Mustangs difficulties during the game which kept us close. Our passing game was not as efficient as it had been over the past few games.”

This brings the Patriots’ record to 2-2.
