Patriots Battle Lakeview in Jamboree Game

By Natalie Brabec, a junior at Leigh High School

The Patriot volleyball team went five sets against Lakeview but could not pull through in the end at the jamboree game on Tuesday, August 25.

NSAA allows each team one jamboree game each year that does not count against a team’s record.

Tuesday night was a back-and-forth battle with Clarkson-Leigh winning the second and fourth sets, but not the final, deciding fifth.

“Overall we thought the jamboree game went really well,” head coach Becky Schneider said. “There were a lot of glimpses of some really good things.  As the game progressed, we were able to build confidence, serve more aggressively, and run a faster tempo ball, which was the result of some really great passes!”

The scores of the sets were 18-25, 25-22, 16-25, 25-20, and 11-15.

Cassidy Hoffman, senior, led the team with 12 kills, while Chole Hanel, freshmen, followed with 11. Kennedy Settje and Alissa Kasik aced Lakeview with two ace serves each.

“We were able to see a lot of things we need to work on,” Schneider said,” starting with more energy throughout the match, serving aggressively from the beginning, more consistent talk and celebrations, and just getting the pass to the target every time.  We know that if we can win the serve/pass game, everything else will fall into place.”

Cassidy Hoffman, a middle blocker for the Patriots, said, “Even though the ending result of the game wasn't exactly what we were hoping for, we still played our butts off and did pretty well for the first time out. We are still finding our flow, but that will come the more we play together. I'd say that this season is looking very promising and that we have a lot of potential to do lots of good things!”

Coach Schneider agrees with Hoffman.

“We are excited to see what the season will bring!  If we can focus on doing the things we can control, and staying relaxed and positive, we can be really successful!  We've got some tough teams on our schedule, but these girls are hungry and ready for those challenges!”  Schneider said.

This year’s volleyball squad is 22 deep and includes freshmen Macy Clausen, Gracie Eisenmann, Tanyn Larson, Chloe Hanel, Addie McAtee, and Alyssa Gurnsey.

Sophomores are Ella Kappel, Sammy McEvoy, Korbee Wendt, and Jessica Hoffman.

Juniors include Melissa Bunner, Bailie Graybil, Natalie Brabec, McKenna Stodola, Makenna Held, Kennedy Settje and Maddie Noonan.

And providing the senior leadership this year are Grace Baumert, Cassidy Hoffman, Bailey Lemburg, Alissa Kasik, and Kayden Schumacher.

In addition to head coach Schneider, the Patriots are assisted by KC Hegemann and Jen Remmereid.

Good Luck to the Patriot Volleyball Team on their 2020 season!
