Patriots Steamroll the Knights in Three

By: Cassidy Hoffman, a senior at Leigh High School

The Lady Patriots rolled out yet another win this week against the Archbishop Bergan Knights, improving their record to 13-1 thus far. It was not perfect play by either party, but it was a close, intense game nonetheless.

The Patriot JV team kicked off the night with a win over the Knights. Clarkson-Leigh took the first set in a close battle, but then lost the second by a large margin. They came into the third set with a sense of urgency, though, and pulled out the win.

The first two sets of the varsity match were incredibly close and intense. Neither team could rattle off more than a couple points without their opponent siding out and going on a run of their own. This type of play continued until the end of the second set with scores of 25-23 and 28-26, reflecting just how close of play it was.

Head coach, Becky Schneider, said, “There were a lot of scrappy plays on both sides which led to long rallies, and we were able to win those long rallies, which are big momentum boosts!  One moment where momentum was a huge factor for us was winning set 2 in extra points! That was an incredible fight for both sides!  We definitely held composure and played to win, and winning that set, we had all the momentum going into set 3.”

The Patriots came out strong in the third set, though, determined to sweep the Knights. They did just that by outsourcing Bergan 25-16.

“We didn't know a whole lot about Archbishop Bergan because we've never played them before,” junior outside hitter Kennedy Settje said, “but we knew it was going to be a tough match. We played scrappy and had some good, long rallies that we ended up winning, which gave us a lot of momentum. Our ball placement with our hits was a key factor in us winning the game. It was a great game to get under our belts!”
