Patriot Golf Team Kicks off Meet at Stanton

By: Alicia Holmberg, a senior at Leigh High School

For the second year in a row, Leigh and Clarkson have had enough interest in girls golf to field a Patriot golf team.

Three girls return to the team for their second year of golf, plus two new faces are additions to this year’s group.

Junior Cortlynn Cadwallader is again the only Leigh student going out for the sport. Joining her are four Clarkson students: Ashly Guillen, sophomore; Hazel Mundt, sophomore; Trinity Eggerman, sophomore; and Kaitlyn Fehrer, junior.

There are also new faces in the coaching positions. Leigh science teacher Jayden Pokorney has stepped into the role as assistant coach and Clarkson resident Mike Meyer takes the reins as the new head coach. Mike is a long-time golfer, so his knowledge is nice to share with the girls.

The girls attended their first meet on September 1 in Stanton.  They scored well compared to last year’s average scores.

“I thought that the first meet went really well,” Cadwallader said. “We all did better than our first meet there last year. We all knocked off about 20 from last year. I am mostly looking forward to seeing all of us improving our scores and just having fun golfing and meeting new people.”

“Our first meet went pretty well in my and Coach Meyer’s eyes,” Assistant Coach Pokorney said.  “We set a goal for the girls, and three of the girls met or exceeded our goal, so apparently Coach Meyer and I have to step up our game!”

“I am very proud of the improvements the girls have made this far,” Pokorney continued. “Of course, we still have room to grow and improve, but I'm glad we have a group of open-minded ladies on our team. They are willing to listen to our advice and do their best to break bad habits. This is a great group of girls to work with!”
