Patriots Finish 2nd at Stanton Tourney
By: Cassidy Hoffman, a senior at Leigh High School
The Patriot volleyball team placed the highest they ever have at the Stanton volleyball tournament this past Saturday, September 19. They also tied the longest winning streak in Patriot volleyball history with the wins earned at this tourney.
Clarkson-Leigh first played Stanton, whom they had already played once and beat them in two sets. It was a similar story on Saturday when the Patriots prevailed over the Mustangs in two, advancing on in the bracket.
Hartington Cedar Catholic was their next opponent. The Patriots defeated them in two very fast-paced sets with scores of 25-23 and 25-17.
In the championship game, it was a face-off between the Lady Pats and the Battle Creek Bravettes. Though the Patriots started off the first set with an 11-1 lead, they ended up losing to the Bravettes in two sets.
“We had an awesome day at the Stanton Tournament! Facing Stanton in the first round was perfect for us because we had faced them earlier in the season and knew we could beat them, and we did just that!” said head coach, Becky Schneider. “We were a little slow on defense and they were able to get some kills, but overall, we were still able to control that match! We served well, attacked well and had a few big blocks that helped keep the momentum on our side!”
Junior setter, Makenna Held, said, “The Stanton Tournament went well for us. Even though we lost our last game in the championship, I’m proud of how we did and I hope we can keep striving to be better than the day before and learn from our loss so we can compete in the championship and win the next tourney.”
Even with the loss, the Clarkson-Leigh volleyball team came home with second place medals and the highest finish at this particular tournament. The Patriots are now 9-1 on the season thus far.
