Final Season VB Game Ends in Heartbreaker

By: Cassidy Hoffman, a senior at Leigh High School

In an intense battle between Clarkson-Leigh and Oakland-Craig, the Lady Patriots volleyball team fell to the Knights in a crazy, heartbreaking five set match on Tuesday, October 20th.

It was a rough night all around for the Lady Pats. C Team started the night off with a loss, and JV followed suit losing in two sets.

The varsity match started with all the power resting on Clarkson-Leigh’s side of the court. They took the first two sets from the Knights with scores of 25-19 and 25-18. The Patriots struggled to finish the game, though, letting the Knights take the third and fourth sets.

It came down to the final set. The entire game was a back and forth match, but the fifth set was literally point for point until Oakland-Craig pushed two points to finish the game after it was tied at 13 points apiece.

The Patriots really struggled to stop Oakland-Craig’s Bailey Helzer who led their team (and the match) with 37 kills.

"We came out ready to play and did great in the first two sets. Oakland- Craig just fought really hard and outscored us. It was pretty evenly matched but I think if we would have capitalized when we needed to we could have definitely pulled out a win,” said junior setter, Makenna Held.
“It was a tough loss, but I'm hoping we can learn from it and get better for subs on Monday."

This game was the Patriot’s final regular season game. We wish them luck at subdistricts and beyond!
