Mrs. Megan Hillen Wins “FCS Teacher of the Year” Award!

By: Natalie Brabec, a junior at Leigh High School

We all know teachers at Leigh Community Schools are second to none.

But it is not every day that a teacher from Leigh is honored by a statewide organization.

This year, Mrs. Megan Hillen, FCS teacher and FCCLA advisor at Leigh High School was the recipient of the Nebraska Family and Consumer Sciences Teachers of Nebraska (FCSTN) “Teacher of the Year” award in the 6-14 year category.

Nebraska FCSTN Teacher of the year, it is an even bigger deal. Mrs. Megan Hillen was the recipient of the teacher of the year award.

There are three categories of the Nebraska FCSTN Teacher of the Year Award, 1-5 years, 6-14 years, and 15+ years. The requirements to apply for this award are the recipients have a membership with FCSTN and must be nominated by their colleagues in the field. They are then evaluated on professional education and experiences, professional impact, impact in schools, impact in communities, and professional growth. After reviewing multiple applications, a selection committee chooses three teachers, one teacher from each level.

When asked how she felt about receiving this award, Mrs. Hillen said this,

“I am very honored to be a recipient of FCSTN Teacher of the Year. I am so grateful to all those who influenced my decision in choosing Family and Consumer Sciences as a career. I have continued to grow my passion for the field and hope that the invaluable lessons provided through FCS positively impact our students and community. Thank you to FCSTN, my FCS colleagues for the nominations, and Leigh Community Schools for continuing to see value in Family and Consumer Sciences.”

Congratulations Mrs. Hillen!!
