Patriot Girls 1-1 After Opening Games

On December 1st, the girls’ varsity team battled against Humphrey High in the first game of the season in Leigh. They were hoping to edge out a win and begin the season undefeated, but that was not in the cards for the Patriot girls.

The girls struggled to score in the first half, with the halftime score 13-19 in favor of the Bulldogs.  The Bulldogs outscored the Patriots by 2 in the third quarter to maintain their lead.  Even after an explosive fourth quarter that saw the Patriots scoring 17 points, it was not enough to come back. The final score for the game was 40-46 with Patriots losing. On December second the girls battled against Madison with a final score of 51-13 and the Patriots winning.

Senior Chloe Hanel led the team in this season opener with 14 points, 4 assists, and 5 steals.  Brynn Settje put up 11 points and 4 steals.  Baylee Settje led the team in rebounds with 8.

Junior Izzy Hollatz said, “I thought that against Humphrey we got our nervousness out for it being our first regular season game. We didn’t have the offensive game we wanted to have, which had us struggling to score points, and the score obviously didn’t end up how we would have liked it too. In the Madison game, we took care of business right from the beginning. This was a lot of help from our press and the execution of our offense throughout the entire game. This helped us get our first win of the season!”

The very next night, on December 2nd, the Patriots faced Madison in an away game.  They definitely responded to the night before, and after an explosive first half, the score was 41-6.  Things slowed down in the second half, and the Pats were unable to put a single point on the board in the fourth quarter, but this still resulted in a 51-13 victory over the dragons.

Hanel put up 17 points in the victory and also led the team in rebounds with 6. Brynn Settje added 12 points and 5 steals.

Senior Gracelyn Eisenmann said, “The HLHF game didn’t go the way we wanted it to and wasn’t how we wanted to start our season but we came back the next day and took care of Madison.”
