Patriot Boys Fall In Close Games

On Friday, December 28th, the Clarkson-Leigh basketball teams headed to Shelby for the holiday tournament.

To kick off the tournament for the boys, the Pats played Fullerton. Coming into the first half, the Clarkson-Leigh boys had a positive mindset. Ending the first quarter, the Patriots were only down by 5. Rounding up the first half, the Patriots couldn’t stop the Warriors from scoring, and trailed by 9.

Coming out of halftime, the boys knew they needed to rack up some points and try to get a lead. At the end of the third quarter, both teams had scored 8 points. Ending the game going into the 4th quarter, the Patriots really pushed to get that win. They scored 22 points, with the Warriors scoring 19. Although they put some shots in the last quarter, the Warriors still came through with the win.

The final score of the game was 53-47 with the Fullerton Warriors on top. Sophomore Tucker Matthies led the team with 12 points, and Trey Steffensmeier added 9 points and 6 rebounds.

After a disappointing loss on Friday, the Patriot boys headed back up to Shelby on Friday to end the Holiday Tournament and play the Shelby Rising City Huskies.

To start the first half, the Huskies were barely on top, with the first-half score ending 33-32.

Quarter 3 started, and the Patriots jumped ahead and scored 20 points, while holding the Huskies to 11. To finish out the game, the Huskies came out on top with a close score of 67-65.

Tucker Matthies and Korbin Lemburg both lead the team and scored 13 points apiece. Trey Steffensmeier was just behind them and added on another 12 points.

Head coach Jeff Bachman said, “I was very pleased with our effort. Our kids played very hard and just came up short in two hard-fought games. I am excited to continue to watch us progress this season.”

Senior Jordan Noonan said, “We had two very close games and we were able to play very hard and compete at a high level. Unfortunately, we didn't get the win in either game, but it is great to see how we are growing as a team and continuing to improve.”
