Patriots Fall to Knights
The Clarkson-Leigh boys and girls basketball teams went up against the Oakland-Craig Knights on December 5th in Clarkson.
There was no girls’ JV game against Oakland-Craig.
The boys’ JV team ended with a 18-24 loss.
The girls’ varsity started off the night doing well with a close game. The girls tried their best to get ahead and stay ahead. They ended the first quarter behind by 2 points with the score 11-13. The girls slowed down in the second quarter and only put up 8 points.
Head Coach Matt Murren said, "We started with a quick start and jumped out to an 11-5 lead. Defensively, we made a few errors and Oakland-Craig capitalized to go on a run in the second quarter. Credit to OC, offensively we couldn't find a rhythm against their defense and struggled getting shots at the rim.”
The girls team tried to catch up after halftime, but the deficit continued to build. At the end of the third quarter the girls were behind by 16 points, and at the final buzzer, the score ended 41-60.
Junior Brynn Settje said, “We started off good right in the beginning of the game, but our defense wasn't the best. Our shots weren't falling like we would have hoped. We tried very hard, but we didn't have our best game.”
Senior Chloe Hanel carried the team offensively, scoring 29 points, while Gracie Eisenmann and Ava Kasik each chipped in 6.
“It is early in the season and we are still filling out roles and finding our spots,” Coach Murren said. “The good news is that all of our errors are fixable, and we will continue to work to improve in those areas.”
The boys team was the final game of the night for the marathon. The boys were hungry for their first win, and finished the first quarter ahead 10-7. They held on to this lead and went into halftime ahead 24-22.
But they were outscored by 10 points in the third quarter, and 5 in the fourth. The disappointing second half for the Patriots led to a final score of 43-56.
Sophomore Kyle McMullin, who led the team with 12 points and 4 assists, said, “We started the game out strong, but then they went on a run to make it a close game. We didn't get the outcome we wanted in the end. Hopefully we learn from this loss and continue to get better.”
