Holiday Tournament Champs!
Every year after moratorium ends, the Clarkson-Leigh girls’ basketball team takes part in a holiday tournament. This year’s tournament took place in Shelby on December 28th and 29th and the Patriot girls emerged as champs! The girls have now won their last 6 games, improving their record to 7-3!
On the first day of the tournament the Patriots faced off against the Fullerton Warriors. The Patriots started off strong and kept the pressure on the Warriors during the first half. The press from the Patriots was too much for the Warriors, causing multiple turnovers and layups for the Patriots. Going into halftime the Patriots led the Warriors 36-5.
In the second half the Patriots continued to dominate on both the offensive and defensive side of the court. The Patriots prevailed over the Warriors 67-20 in the first round of the tournament and advanced to the championship.
Head coach Matt Murren said, "The girls did a fantastic job coming off the break and putting together a great game against Fullerton. We brought great energy on both ends of the floor, resulting in our defense creating our offense. It was a great way to start back up after a nice break.”
The next day the Patriots matched up against the Shelby-Rising City Huskies in the championship game. Similar to the day before, the Patriots kept pressure on the Huskies and executed well on defense and offense. After the first half of the game, the Patriots led the Huskies 31-11.
Coming out of halftime the Patriots continued to work hard on the defensive end, which led to multiple girls stepping up and making plays on the offensive side of the court. The Patriots were soon crowned champions after defeating the Huskies 65-31.
In the championship game against Shelby-Rising City we did a great job again having energy on both ends of the floor. It felt good to get back on the court again and see the girls execute at a high level. It was a great year to send us into the new year,” Coach Murren said.
“I thought we took care of business at the holiday tournament for both games,” junior Izzy Hollatz said. “We executed our game plan to make offensive plays, and our defense really stopped both teams. This helped us win against Fullerton, Shelby-Rising City, and the whole tournament!”
