Boys’ BBall Defeats Winside

On December 4, the Patriot boys’ basketball team traveled to Oakland to put up their best fight against the Oakland-Craig Knights. The JV started off the night. Although they battled hard against the Knights, they could not pull through with a win and lost 28-60.

Leading Scorers were Travis Stanley and Carter Hanel with 6 points each, and Logan Schroeder with 5.

After watching the JV lose, the varsity team knew they would need to pick it up. After a rough first half down 48-21, the boys worked as hard as ever in the last half but couldn’t secure a win, losing 43-92. Freshman Jarred Novotny led the team with 16 points while sophomore Tommy McEvoy added 13. Senior Daniel Beller put in his share with 10.

Two days later on December 6, the JV boys came out ready to play, getting a nine-point lead against the Winside Wildcats. Everyone gave it their allm and it showed as they pulled through with a win, 24-9. Leading scorer was Logan Schroeder with 7 points.

After watching the girls’ varsity defeat the Wildcats, the boys were prepared to do the same, looking for their first win of the season.

The boys got a good lead in the first half, ahead by 35 heading into the locker room at halftime. They came back ready as ever in the second half to do the same.

The boys varsity got their first win. The ending score was 60-17.

"We didn't start the week off like we wanted to at Oakland-Craig, but that happens sometimes. We got in a good practice to prepare us for our game against Winside. We ended up getting our first win and it really boosted to the whole team's morale. I think we played well and it payed off for us,”  Daniel Beller, a senior at Leigh had to say.

Head Coach, Jeff Bachman said “It is good to see our young team continue to grow. We need to get better at taking care of the basketball and scoring, but progress is being made and these games were both great examples of that.”
