Patriot GBB Improves to 13-2

Sophomore Cassidy Hoffman plays defense against LHNE.

The month of January can be a grind for any basketball team, squeezing in many games in a short amount of time.

But the Clarkson Leigh Patriot girls’ team just keeps on rolling, picking up another set of back-to-back wins against Twin River on January 18 and Lutheran High Northeast on January 21.

The TR Titans were up first on the chopping block.  The Titans came into the game with about a .500 record.

The Patriots had a close first half with the Titans as the score ended 14-16, Patriots down. During half-time, the Patriots devised their comeback.

Patriot defense held the Titans at 3 points in the 3rd quarter while scoring 12 in return. They rounded out the game with a Patriot win. The final score was 34-25.

Senior Kaegan Held and junior Ashlynn Novotny tied for leading scorer with the most points during the game with 11 each. Hannah Kasik added 8.

Junior Reagan Settje said, "We knew Twin River was going to be a tough game going into it and that we were going to have to stay focused and play our game. We had a rough start, but we didn't let it stop us. We got back to the game plan that we had and came out with the win."

Head Coach Matt Muren said, "This was a great road victory for the girls to be able to grind it out and get the win. We came out in the second half and did some great things to get ourselves the lead. In the fourth quarter we were able to maintain possession and knock down free throws for the victory. Conference wins are always great, especially on the road."

Due to the nasty weather, the Lutheran High Northeast game was postponed to Monday, January 21. The Patriots didn’t let the cold weather stop them from bringing home yet another win against the 4-12 Eagles.

The Patriots started out very well in the first half with 37 points. As the Patriots kept working hard, they held their opponents at 23 points.

The Patriots’ defense held the Eagles to only 24 points in the second half. The Patriots kept pushing and eventually got the win, 61-47.

Senior Kaegan Held led the team with 16 points while junior Ashlynn Novotny led the team with 6 rebounds.  Hannah Kasik added 10 points and 7 steals.

Sophomore Cassidy Hoffman said, “We definitely came out great in the first quarter by scoring 27 points offensively! Our energy was great and we really meshed well with each other. We let them come back into the game for a while, but we stepped it up again and finished the game out strong. It was a great game to come out with the win!”

Head Coach Matt Murren said, "Scoring 27 points in the first quarter for us was a program record. We came out with the right mentality, knocked down shots and really did a great job of pushing in transition. It was a great way to start off the week."
