Boys Win 1 Game in Conference Tourney

The Howells-Dodge Jaguars, ranked #4, hosted the 13th-ranked Clarkson-Leigh Patriots on January 26 in the first-round of the East Husker Conference tournament.

Right at the tip-off, everyone was ready for a great game against the rival Jaguars.  The Jaguars came out right away, hitting almost every shot they took. They attacked the hoop hard and the Patriots just couldn’t seem to stop their offense.

The Patriots on the other hand couldn’t knock down as many shots. They fought hard until the horn went off signaling the end of the first quarter. At this point, the score was 8-22. After a quick break, they came back in the 2nd quarter with a little more energy scoring 15 points in the quarter. At the end of the half the score was 15-28.

After going over game plan at halftime, the Patriots came out and looked ready to battle back. They got after it and fought hard. The Jaguars continued to make it look easy, scoring a total of 20 points that quarter with the Patriots only scoring 8.

During the 4th quarter, the Patriots outscored the Jaguars. Even though they did this, it wasn’t enough to come back. The final score was 43-78.

Daniel Beller had a tremendous game shooting outside and in the paint. He attacked the hoop, knocked shots down from the free throw line, and shot from beyond the arc. Throughout the game, he put up 17 points.

Freshman Logan Schroeder said, “We had a slow start and just couldn't hit shots, whereas they couldn't miss shots.”

Head Coach Jeff Bachman said, “I was proud of how we battled, but we turned it over too many times and had too many defensive mistakes to beat a good team like Howells-Dodge.”

For the boys second round of conference, they traveled to Twin River to play Tekamah Herman in the loser’s bracket. This game was played on February 1st. Hoping to start the month off on a good note, they came in ready to get after it.

They started out the 1st quarter right by pushing the ball and getting after it.  Because they were playing solid basketball, they came out on top in the 1st quarter with a score of 18-13.

While looking to do the same in the 2nd quarter, they came out ready. Playing an even better second quarter, it resulted in a 25-point quarter for the Patriots, while they held the Tigers to 12. At the end of the 1st half the score was 43-25.

After talking things over in the locker room, they came out with the same mindset. Pushing the ball up the court, they continued to score points. Tekamah Herman found their groove and started scoring more too. With both teams scoring 18 points in the 3rd, the score was 61-43.

The 4th quarter went similar to the 3rd with both teams scoring 15 points. Good defense and offense played by both teams. In the end, the final score showed the Patriots on top with a score of 76-58.

Once again, Daniel Beller showed everyone what he’s capable of. Shooting very well, he scored 24 points for the Patriots, making 2 threes, eight 2 pointers, and 2 free throws.

Sophomore Trevor Zulkoski said, “I thought it went way better than last time. The shots were falling and we played a lot better.”

The Clarkson-Leigh Patriots look to continue their season on Tuesday, February 5 against Logan View/Scribner-Snyder.
