Thinkin’ Lincoln!

Patriot Girls’ Basketball Heads to Sub-State Round

Senior Hannah Kasik posts up and looks for the ball during Thursday night's sub-district finals game against Battle Creek while junior Ashlynn Novotny looks on. The Patriots defeated the Braves to make it to the sub-state round on Friday, February 22.

The Patriot girls’ basketball team has made it to sub-state (formerly known as the district finals) for the first time since the schools combined sports.  Thoughts of Lincoln and the state tournament loom, with only one game standing in their way!

The week of sub-districts definitely proved to be an exciting, yet stressful week for the Clarkson/Leigh girls’ basketball team. They knew that they were going to have to get past two solid teams in order to make it to the final round before state.

For the first round of subs, the Patriots took on the Norfolk Catholic Knights. The Knights were a young team, and the Patriots knew that their own experience would help them out in the long run.

The first quarter was evenly matched. Both teams only scored 8 points, and the second quarter proved to be no different. Going into halftime the score was 17-15 with the Patriots on top.

The Patriots’ defense would hold the Knights’ offensive game, but they had to come out of the half with a little bit more offensive energy.

The third quarter started out a little bit rough, but it didn’t take long for the Patriots to take control of the game.

The Patriots still had their lead going into the fourth, and they were able to keep it to win the game 39-32.

Senior, Hannah Kasik contributed 16 of the 39 points for the Patriots.

The following Thursday, the Patriots took on the Battle Creek Bravettes. They knew that their defensive energy had to be just as strong as it was on Tuesday.

The first quarter was a close game in terms of points, but the Patriots really kicked in their offensive mindset in the second quarter.

The Clarkson/Leigh girls were able to outscore the Bravettes 16-2 in the second quarter, bringing the halftime score to 24-12.

The Patriots never gave up the lead after the second quarter. The Bravettes outscored the Patriots 9-12 in the third quarter, but the Patriots held on.

The fourth quarter was no different. Even though the Bravettes once again outscored the Patriots 6-10, the Patriots lead they took in the second quarter kept them on top.

The final score was 39-34, and the Clarkson/Leigh girls were headed to Sub-State!

Kasik had another outstanding night, accumulating 10 points and 11 rebounds. Senior, Kaegan Held contributed 13 points, and junior Ashlynn Novotny had 10 rebounds.

“It was an awesome game and experience for the girls to play in. Our defensive intensity and energy all night was outstanding,” said head coach, Matt Murren. “The atmosphere was great and the smiles at the end of the game were even better.”

The Patriots record going into Sub-State is 21-3.  The will be State-Bound for the first in Patriot girls’ basketball history if they win their sub-state game against Blue Hill in York on Friday, February 22.

Go Pats!
