Undefeated BRLD Teams Defeat Patriots

By: Cassidy Hoffman, junior at Leigh High School

The Patriot basketball teams traveled to Bancroft on Friday, the 13th of December. This traditional day of bad luck may have rubbed off on the Patriots, as they came out with only one win out of four on the night.

The girls’ JV was a hard-fought game, but the ending score, although close, was in favor of Bancroft-Rosalie/Lyons-Decatur. The boys’ JV was very similar, but the ending result was different. The boys came out with the only win for the night with a score of 31-23 over the Wolverines.

The varsty teams knew they had their work cut out for them, as both the boys and girls had undefeated records.

The girls’ varsity was very close throughout the entire game. It was neck and neck between the two opposing teams until the Patriots hit a dry spell from the middle of the second quarter until the end of the third quarter. The game ended in the Wolverines’ favor with a score of 29-37.

Junior, Bailey Lemburg said, “We knew going into the game that it was going to be a tough game. As a team, we came out and played our best game of the season. The game was super fun to play in even though we did not come out on top.”

“We played a great defensive game with high energy and high intensity, holding a BRLD team that averages mid 60s to 37 points. Offensively I love the shots that we were getting but we just couldn’t get any to fall. The girls need to keep shooting with confidence and sooner or later they will start to fall.”

The boys’ varsity game was a rough one. The Patriots were outscored 66-19 by the Wolverines with our high scorer, Eli Hays, scoring only 6 points.

“I thought we played really hard, but ran into a great team,” said head coach, Jeff Bachman. “We shot poorly and didn't do enough to compete with a team that talented.”

BRLD is currently the reigning state champion and only lost one senior, who was not a starter.

“We played hard and gave a lot of effort, and I think everyone was going all out the entire game from start to finish. They were just the better team that night. We just need to keep working hard to achieve what we want to in the upcoming games,” sophomore, Mitchel Beeson said.
