Girls’ Basketball Start Season with Back-to-Back Wins

By: Kennedy Settje, a junior at Leigh High School

The first game of the basketball season was played on Friday, December 4. Traveling a short distance to a big rivalry game, the Patriots were ready for a battle against the Humphrey-Lindsay Holy Family Bulldogs.

If they were looking for a battle, they got one. Within the first three quarters, the game remained tied 31 all. It all came down to the fourth quarter. With a quick pep talk from the head coach, Matt Murren, the girls came out ready to pull away from the Bulldogs.

Head coach Matt Murren said, “Going into the fourth, the game was tied, and we knew that we just had to look to execute offensively and defensively to win the game. We knew we  just needed to play our own game. We were able to do that and get offensive looks that we didn't find the first three quarters. I was very proud of the girls for digging deep and pulling out a rivalry game."

Freshman Chloe Hanel and senior Bailey Lemburg led the team with 13 points each.

An intense battle against the Bulldogs was a great win for the Patriots to start out the year.

With a quick turn-around, Clarkson-Leigh took on Madison on Saturday, December 5 at Leigh. With it being the first home game in the new gym, the Patriots were fired up from the start.

The Patriots jumped to a quick lead right from the get go. Outscoring the Dragons 27-6 in the first quarter, the Patriots secured a solid lead and never looked back.

Heading into halftime the score was 40-6.

Coming back from half, the Patriots got a quick 6 points off of steals and run-out layups. Clarkson-Leigh continued to create their own energy and play a solid game of basketball. The final score of the game was 58-17.

Junior Kennedy Settje led the team with 19 points and 7 rebounds.

Junior Makenna Held said, “"The Madison game was a good opportunity for us to crisp things up and make sure we played our level. We cleaned up our offense more from Friday and worked on little things like ball handling and press. We are off to a good start this season, and I can't wait to keep seeing my team’s progress!”
