GBB Clinches Two Mid-Week Games

By: Jessica Hoffman, a junior at Leigh High School

Dribble, pass, shoot, and defend. That was the plan that the Clarkson-Leigh Girls Basketball team had going into their games against Oakland-Craig on December 7th and Winside on December 9th.

The girls’ JV team beat Oakland-Craig 26-20 in their home court at Clarkson in just two quarters. The varsity followed suit and sent Oakland-Craig home with another loss. Their score was 40-34.

A big first quarter helped the Patriots secure a 15-12 lead going into halftime against the Knights.  After that, the Patriots were able to hold on for the win in the fourth quarter even though the Knights outscored them 16-15.

“Everyone stepped up in this game and played a role in the victory,” Head Coach Matt Murren said. “They were really putting pressure on Chloe and Kennedy, so others had to step up and score and make plays for us. We were able to answer their scoring drive in that fourth quarter each time to keep the pressure on them. We had five different girls score in that 4th quarter, and that was a giant key for us that they couldn't just key on 1 or 2 people. Overall it was a great team win and much needed in a physical game.”

The Lady Patriots had another opportunity for a win in their home court in Leigh against Winside just two days later. The JV team came out strong in their two-quarter game and beat the Wildcats 23-1. Once again, the varsity followed the JV by also taking a win in a runaway victory. The end score of varsity was 61-23.

Junior Varsity player Korbee Wendt said, “The Oakland-Craig game was overall a fun match. It was a loud and energetic atmosphere. We came out and took care of things right away and it was a good win.

“The Winside match was a little slower pace, but it was also a fun game,” Wendt continued. “We went into this game with good energy and came out with a fun win.”

These two wins bring the early season record for the Patriot girls to 3-1.
