Patriot Season Ends at Sub-State

By: Carter Brabec, a freshman at Leigh High School

The Patriots boys’ basketball team’s fantastic season ended on Saturday, February 26, when they lost to the Wahoo High School Warriors.

The Patriots secured their bid at sub-state after defeating Lakeview and Logan View/Scribner-Snyder in the sub-district games held in Leigh earlier in the week.

The boys then traveled to Wahoo to take on the #1 team in C-1.  Head Coach Mr. Jeff Bachman was even dripped out in a suit for the occasion.

The Patriot boys played with pride and class and represented their communities well.

They came out strong in the first two quarters, keeping the score really close and proving they can play with any team.  At one point, they were up by five points. But Wahoo switched from man defense to a 1-3-1 defense toward the end of the second quarter, and the Patriots struggled moving the ball after this.   Then going into the end of the second quarter, Wahoo hit some shots that would separate the two teams by a handful or so by half time.

Both the teams came out of halftime and the Patriots were trying to get right back with them. But Wahoo was still hitting a lot of shots and really pestering the Patriots on defense, proving why they are the #1 team.

The Warriors continued to widen their lead on the Patriots in the second half, and the final score was 50-77 Warriors.

The Patriots’ highest scorer was senior Jared Novotny, who registered 21 points. He also posted 3 rebounds, 2 assists, and one steal. Jared finished the season 24 points away from reaching 1000 career points.

Even though the Patriots didn’t qualify for the state tournament as they hoped, this was a season to remember, as they broke many Patriot boys’ basketball records.  Their final season record was 19-6, which is the most wins of any Patriot boys’ season to date.  This team also boasts the longest Patriot boys win streak with 11.  This was also the first time the Patriot boys reached a sub-state game. And as a team, they only allowed 40.4 points to the other team on average, which is also a Patriot best.

They also broke many individual Patriot records as well.  Senior Carter Hanel broke “Blocks in a Season” with 101, “Career Blocks” with 294, and “Career Rebounds” with 895.

Senior Eli Hays broke “Steals in a Season” with 73 and “Career Steals” with 174.

Senior Jared Novotny “Points in a Season” with 369, “Career Points” with 976, “Field

Goals Made” with 301, “Three Pointers Made” with 131, and “Free Throws Made” with 243.

“I was very proud of our effort this year,” Coach Bachman said. “This was a group that was fun to coach and be around.  They grew through the year, worked hard, and played some great ball.  I am proud of their growth as ball players and as young men.”
