JH GBB Finishes Season

The junior high girls’ basketball team had a tough season this year, playing many competitive teams, and having a mostly seventh-grade squad.

The girls began their season on Tuesday, December 2, as the team battled David City Aquinas at David City. The A team lost 14-33, but the B team came out with a win to end with a score of 24-10.

Later on in the week on Thursday, December 4, they took on Lakeview in Leigh with both the A and B teams taking the victory. The A game score was 18-14 and the B game score was 34-14.

8th grader Ella Hansen said, “For the Lakeview game I think we did amazing. We did lots of good things on offense and defense. I know we all had a fun time playing that game.

For the Aquinas game even though we lost, we all did things that were good and made us get some points. We played good for playing against a very good team. I can't wait to see how we do the rest of the season.”

Assistant coach Mrs. Melissa Brabec said, “It was great to get a couple wins over these games!  The girls have been working hard and seeing some great looks and taking shots offensively. We also had almost everyone get points on the board, which is fun to see the teamwork in a game!”

On December 6, the A and B team played Humphrey/Lindsay Academy.

“I think we played well for playing against a good team,” Hansen said. “Even though we lost I am very happy about how we played. We have things to work on but I am excited to see us play the rest of the season.” The final score of the A game was 16-40 while the final score for the B game was 6-33.

The Junior High girls turned around and played Archangels on December 8th.

“Although the outcome was not what we wanted, I thought we played great! St. Fran was a difficult team but we still made them work for their win. It was a fun game and we will go for the next win!” said 7th grader Mariah Kasik.

The final score of the A game was 17-33, while the B game ended 11-35.

Coach Melissa Brabec said “These were fast paced, aggressive games and we fell short on our shooting. We continue to improve on different aspects of the game, we just need to put it all together.”

Next, the girls played Howells-Dodge on December 11. This game only had 2 quarters of B team, which resulted in a loss.  The A team also lost that day.

Next up was Schuyler on December 16.  The A team won, and B team lost this one.  And finally, on December 18, the girls played their final game against Madison, and the A and B team both won!

The A team finished the season with a 3-4 record, and the B team also ended up 3-4!

Seventh-grader Emery Malena said, “We had some ups and downs this season, but we grew as a team. I enjoyed playing with my teammates, and it was a great experience overall!”
