Varsity GBB Remains Undefeated!

By: Jessica Hoffman, a sophomore at Leigh High School

The Patriot girls’ basketball team kept their undefeated streak alive in their second week of games this season!

On December 8, the girls traveled to play Oakland-Craig.

The JV girls lost in a close one. The final score of their game was 21-23.

The Varsity girls, however, took the win. They battled and played hard making the ending score 39-31 against a quality Knight team.

When senior Alissa Kasik was asked how the games went she said, "We definitely gave it our all, and it showed on the defensive end. We built off of each other's energy and excitement and just took care of business."

Kasik was part of a very balanced attach for the Patriots with 9 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 assists.

Coach Matt Murren was asked how the Varsity did versus Oakland-Craig, and he said, “The Varsity game was a big win for the team. The girls came out and played a game with great effort and intensity on both ends of the court. They executed the defensive game plan forcing Oakland-Craig into shots that they didn't want to take, and that is credit to our girls understanding the scouting report and executing. Offensively, we were able to make enough plays to pull away in the secnd half and secure the victory.”

Two days later they had another away game in Winside. The girls’ JV only played two quarters, but they still came out with a win. The ending score of their game was 18-11.

“The JV was able to get back on the winning track with their performance at Winside,” Coach Murren said. “We started out a little slow but got things going in the 2nd quarter, which allowed us to pull away for the victory.”

The Varsity girls also won their game by more than 40 points with their final score being 62-21.

Junior Makenna Held was asked what she thought of the games and she responded, “The Winside game was a great win for us. We got a lot of fast breaks and multiple steals in our press. We worked on setting up our offense better and executing transition. Overall it was a good night for all teams and I'm excited to see what we can continue to improve on for future games."

Overall it was a great week for the Clarkson-Leigh Girls Basketball team. The Varsity is undefeated and the JV is 2-3 for games.
