Senior Spotlight: Karly Wendt

For the grand class of Leigh High School 2026, our first senior spotlight of the year is none other than Karly Mewis Wendt.

Kandee and Gary Wendt were blessed July 15, 2007, with their daughter, Karly.

Karly Wendt has four older siblings: Korbee Wendt, 20; Krys (Wendt) Magsamen, 36; Kim Wendt, 38; and the late Wade Wendt.

Her grandparents are the late Earl and Joy Wendt and Jim and Judene Mewis.

Karly is very involved in extracurricular activities at Leigh. She has been involved in FFA for 5 years; volleyball, dance, One-Act, journalism, and track for 4 years; band, yearbook, and FCCLA for 3 years; and cheer and National Honor Society for 2 years.

It is through her school activities Karly has made her best high school memories, especially attending state and national FFA.

Outside of school, Karly has been involved in Youth Advisory Committee and Zion Lutheran Church Youth Group.

You might also find Karly working part time at Schwartz Farms.

Karly has received the honors of National Honor Roll, A/B Honor Roll, dance team captain, FFA officer, and YAC officer.

When asked what her greatest school accomplishment is, she replied, “I would say my proudest accomplishment would be getting into National Honor Society. To most people, it might not seem like the biggest deal, but I’m proud of it because I work hard for the grades I have. Knowing I’m not nearly as smart as some of the people in my class pushes me to be better and improve every day.”

Karly’s future plans are to attend Northeast Community College to obtain her business degree, then go to the College of Hair Design to get her esthetician license.

If she could travel anywhere in the world, she would choose Bora Bora because of the views and warm weather.  Her top three things on her bucket list are to go to Bora Bora, attend 100 concerts, and live on a farm with her dream house and different animals.

If she were to win the lottery, she would “donate some of it to different charities, go on a shopping spree, and save the rest for college expenses.”

Her biggest pet peeve is when people judge someone or act like they know someone when they have never met. She says her worst bad habit is procrastination.

In 15 years, she sees herself with a job that she loves going to. She hopes to live comfortably and without debt. Along with that, she hopes to be married and starting a family, potentially in Leigh.

Someone that she admires in her life is Justine Fischer because, no matter what, she has a smile and lights up everyone's day. She is also down to earth and willing to take the time out of her day to talk to you, no matter how busy she is. She is also busy but still shows up with a good attitude and energy everyday.

Outside of school, Karly enjoys going to concerts, shopping, and hanging out with friends.

Some of her favorite things include her favorite subjects, American History and CNA class, her favorite TV show, Gossip Girl, her favorite movie is Dazed and Confused, and her favorite book is The Outsiders.  Her favorite song is Till You Can't by Cody Johnson, but her favorite artist is Jason Aldean. Her favorite team is the Dallas Cowboys, and her favorite restaurant is Raising Canes.

Her most embarrassing moment is the pizza video. “If you know, you know,” Karly said.

Before she leaves Leigh High School behind, her advice to underclassmen is “build good relationships with your classmates. I personally don’t know what I would do without my classmates. Those are some of the most important relationships in your life right now. Take the time out of your day to have a small conversation with each of your classmates. You never know what is going on in their life, and they might appreciate it.”
