Student Opinion: No Taxation without Representation for Youth
Since taxes started, taxation without representation has been a large debate. A large point of conversation is that people who are too young to vote still have to pay taxes. I am in the camp who believes that since we don’t have the option to vote, underage teenagers shouldn’t have to pay taxes.
Other people say that everyone who doesn't vote shouldn’t have to pay taxes. I don’t agree with this because it would discourage people from voting. This shouldn’t be in the law because even though they didn’t vote, they still have the option to and some sort of control over what their tax money goes to.
I believe that since people my age don’t have any control over where our money goes, there is no reason that we should have to pay taxes. I understand that we use the roads and other government-funded facilities, but like I said earlier, we don’t have any control over it.
Kids my age are also relying on government-funded programs to pay for their college, even though the government is where a large portion of their money went. Taxing teenagers has made it harder for them to pay for college and help them start their future positively. Not only is it causing financial stress on the student, but their parents as well.
I know that a lot of my classmates and people my age nationally agree that there is no reason that we should have to pay taxes if we can’t vote. They all had very similar viewpoints that even though we do use some government facilities like our school and the roads, we don't have any control over the decision, so we shouldn’t have to pay for it. It is the same as having to give a large portion of money to someone and telling them to do whatever they want with it. The idea of no taxation without representation is as old as the American Revolution, but it still applies, in this case with youth.
